Post a Comment, Win A DVD on Water Safety

Summer's (almost) here and you know what that means - lots of time in the pool, at the beach and anywhere that has water and is refreshing. When kids are around water, there must be some safety rules in place to keep everyone safe.

A few weeks ago I wrote a post on a great group of characters called the Danger Rangers and their DVD called Water Works that teaches kids about being "water safe" in a fun way they can really understand. One Chic Mama has 5 Water Works DVDs to give away to help your kids learn water safety this summer. Simply post a comment here on kids and water safety - anything from questions to suggestions or just general water safety comments - between now and midnight on Friday, June 15, and you'll be entered into our drawing.

My three year old daughter just started swim lessons last week, so this would be a great DVD for her to check out. The main thing they are teaching her right now is that she should always "reach for the side of the pool"- so obvious, but I guess most kids aren't taught that.

I have three children -- 1, 5, and 7 -- and we spend a lot of time at our neighborhood pool. We're lucky to have a large shallow well my middle child can stand in, and my older child is fine anywhere but the diving well without my being with him. I keep the baby in a boat "floatie," but the biggest help is that there are many other parents of small children nearby and we all keep a watch on everyone at the same time.

This would be so absolutely helpful for my kids for the summer.

I take my niece to the pool every week and this would be great. She is getting too brave in the water. Makes me nervous.

We live up the hill from two beaches, so we are in the water regularly.

Our beach tips are:
Knowing how to swim is NOT the same as being drown-proof

Watch out for any undertows or currents

Watch out for sudden drop-offs after sand bars

If the beach doesn't have a lifeguard, only swim if there is an adult with you who can swim

My kids seem to like safety tips from TV rather than me, so we'd love the DVD!

As a nurse, I think that every parent should take an infant/child cpr class and a safety class so they are prepared to assist should something happen rather than waiting for paramedics. It also helps to have that basic knowledge so that in an emergency a 911 operator can guide the parent and he/she will have had some prior knowledge.

All pools should have a cover or a gate or something to prevent kids from wandering and exploring. Even if a parent thinks they closed or locked a back door, kids can slip out that one time and get into trouble very very quickly

Even pools for adults there are some safety rules, so there must be some safety rules in place to keep everyone safe. Specially with children.
