Do you remember that fun little invention, soap on a rope? I remember it was always fun to use soap with such a strange name. Well, turns out there's more to it than just fun and games. The folks at Irie Star have concocted a new take on the old-fashioned soap-on-a-rope. Using fresh, organic ingredients, Irie Star lovingly handcrafts their soaps in small batches. These pretty flower-shaped soaps hang from a rayon cord that helps them dry out between uses and keep them bacteria-free, making them perfect for grown-ups and children alike.

A Great Lap Desk
Spring and summer are the perfect time for a lap desk. I find myself sitting in the backyard, enjoying the sunshine while catching up on some notes or paperwork. My daughter enjoys her lap desk while taking trips (even short ones) in the car. It's perfect for creating sculptures with her current obsessions, tape and paper, and more tape. It's also good for coloring, enjoying a snack or reading a book.I found this Graphic Lap Desk from The Container Store and fell in love! It combines functionality with style. With a soft pillow underneath, this desk is perfect for your kids' rooms, your backyard, the car or anywhere, and it even has a cupholder! Grab one of these for that long cartrip this summer and your kids will be entertained for hours.

April Showers...

With April right around the corner, your thoughts have probably turned to gardening, Easter, and rain! Tis the season for that sudden thunderstorm that seemingly drops about 1/2" of rain in half an hour.

Of course your kids are going to want to go out and play when it's over. Pull on your rainboots and join them outside for a little puddle jumping. With these cute rainboots from Walmart.com

Vacation Memories
Elizabeth Galecke realizes that some of a family's best moments happen when they're on vacation at the beach, and she sets out each summer for several weeks to capture those moments. She books her shoots months in advance (call her to see if she can squeeze your family in!) around the North Carolina shores. Then she gets to work. Elizabeth has a real way with kids. She is like the child-whisperer when it comes to connecting with kids, and she is able to coax out the very spirit of each child (adults, too!). I've seen it happen many times. She does her best shooting when the kids are at play, just being kids, and she knows when to press the button to immortalize that look, that gesture, that special something you want to remember about your kids at such a sweet age.
Elizabeth Galecke Photography also offers what they call, A Day In the Life, where she comes to your house early in the morning and follows your kids around with a camera all day. Take a peek at her portfolio and you'll see how she's captured sleepy kids in the morning, having breakfast, playing in the yard, having dinner, and the bedtime ritual. It's nice to have such mundane events immortalized because in 10 years, you'll have forgotten about how much fun it was making bubble beards at bathtime.
So if you're looking to capture your kids in the way you want to remember best, give Elizabeth a call. She'll schedule you for beach photos, or she'll travel to your destination. And believe me, she's worth it!

Monkey & Me

I just love cute tees for my kids. These great new designs from Bushel & Peck are sure to bring a smile to your child's face. The Silly Monkey t-shirts each feature one of twenty adorable sock monkey portraits (they'll choose one for you), hand-embroidered on a bright red cotton tee. They can even personalize the shirt by adding the name of your favorite silly monkey. Talk about cute. I can't wait to see my son in his!
Motivation for Your Workout
Some days it's all I can do to drag myself to the gym. Just getting the kids packed up and ready, getting myself changed and getting out the door can be a major feat. Once I get there, I cross my fingers that I'll get a parking space near the door. With a pre-schooler that likes to dart around the parking lot, and a baby still in the "bucket", it's another major feat to just get in the door of the gym all in one piece. Once inside, I get them settled in the Kid's Corner, and I'm free to workout. Oh, yeah. That is why I'm here. Except, after all that, I'm exhausted. So I drag myself upstairs to the 9:30 Super Sculpt ('cause after having 2 kids, there's a lot left to scuplt!) and give it my best shot. The instructor (a mom, herself) puts us through a grueling workout and I find myself looking at the clock, oh, about every five minutes. Are we done yet? However, the other day I wore my great new t-shirt from Mirrorvations and when I looked in the mirror, I was awarded an extra shot of motivation to keep going. Mirrorvations' t-shirts come in several different styles, and have inspirational sayings on the front - printed BACKWARDS! So that when you are working out in front of a mirror, you see it the right way in your reflection. With phrases like "Perception is Reality", "Every Action Counts" and "I Choose", these great t-shirts will keep your mind off the size of your thighs and help keep you focused and inspired. What mom doesn't need that every day? Way to go, Mirrorvations!

One Size Fits All
Who doesn't like slipcovers when you have messy kids (and dirty hands) around? You just toss them in the wash when they get dirty. How about slipcovers in paper that can just be sponged off and reused? Now that's icing on the cake. In a limited run for Target, Belgian designer, Isabelle de Borchgrave, has created a lovely line of slipcovers designed to fit standard sized dining chairs along with table cloths out of paper! Designed to be sponged off and re-used, her lovely nasturtium and rose-petal patterned designs are perfect for afternoon tea, or just livening up the dinner table. Perfect for indoor or outdoor entertaining. When they become soiled, simply toss them away (or, as we prefer, recycle them). At $3.99 a pop, they're a fun way to add a fresh touch to your next meal!
Available from Target.

White Hot!
Happy spring! Today marks the first official day of spring - is your wardrobe ready for a clean sweep? While you're packing away all those winter pieces and thinking about what to add for spring, think white. White will give you a fresh, clean look and is all the rage this season. Of course, it may not be the most practical color choice when you have kids around, but you can wear a few pieces in white (like this Safari Roll-up Jacket from the Gap - on sale for $49.99), and mix them up with a sand or khaki color. Freshen up your spring look, not with a shot of color, but with a shot of white!

Eco-Friendly Stroller Bag
All stroller bags are not create equal. The good folks at Fleurville know this, so they set out to create one that fits the needs of your mobile family, while also being eco-minded. The Mobi Stroller Bag is the 'cleanest', lightest bag they have ever made. It's also the most eco-friendly stroller bag around. The Mobi is made from a product called Re-Run™ which is created using recycled plastic water bottles. Each bag keeps approximately 8 water bottles out of the landfill. Yet for all it's eco-minded prowess, the Mobi is long on practicality too. With little touches like a fleece-lined electronics/sunglasses pocket, an ‘ear-bud pass-thru’ badge and 5 interior pockets keep your necessities protected, the Mobi will serve both parents and children well. The majority of storage is located inside the bag and is easily accessed via a huge opening with double zippers. There is a single padded handle for easy opening and visibility into the bag. For frequently used or odd-sized items like bottles and umbrellas (or baguettes), they built 2 external shock-cord lacing systems that allow quick access and extra storage. And the under $70 price tag makes it more affordable than you thought. Save the planet and have it all? I think so!
Weight No More
After giving birth to my second child back in October, I found myself with a few (well, more than a few) extra pounds that just wouldn't budge. I lost some weight rapidly the first couple of weeks after birth, but even though I was breastfeeding, a bit more was sticking to me like white on rice. As you moms who have nursed know, when you are breastfeeding, your appetite is tremendous. So it's a big challenge to think about losing weight while still nursing. Plus, the rumors have it that reducing your caloric intake to a certain level will affect milk production. So what's an overweight, stressed-out, sleep-deprived and hungry mom to do? Summer's right around the corner and I wanted to be able to fit into my cute tops and skirts, as well as look and feel good all around. Weight Watchers has a solution. You can join online, with a free trial week membership. You can use their point system to easily keep track of your daily food intake. And they even have a program for nursing moms! Once I discovered this, I was all about it. After figuring up the amount of points in many of the foods I was eating, I realized that it wasn't WHAT I was eating, but it was HOW MUCH. I like that I can still have peanut butter on my toast for breakfast, but only one tablespoon as opposed to two. I like that I can still have some chocolate chips after dinner (Trader Joe's are my fave), and that a tablespoon (about 21 chips) is all I need to satisfy my craving. There are plenty of things I can nosh on when I'm feeling super hungry (air-popped popcorn, carrots, pretzels). I found that if I make the bulk of our meals up using veggies and round them out with a small portion of meat (about 4 oz. - who needs a whole 8 oz. chicken breast anyway?) and a healthy grain such as brown rice or whole grain pasta, I'm left feeling full and can lose the weight easily without feeling deprived.
So after loosely following the Weight Watchers point system for three weeks, I can successfully say I've lost about 10 pounds. I've begun incorporating far more fruits and veggies into my daily diet, and I've upped the number of times I walk or go to the gym in a week. And best of all, I haven't had to do it alone. My husband has been on board with me and it's been nice to have each other for support.
I still have a few pounds to go, but following this system has been easy and, dare I say it, fun! It's nice to know what my limitations are so I don't just go into the kitchen and graze aimlessly when I'm really just tired, or just need a big glass of water. I think more about what I eat, and more importantly, about how much.
So if you'd like to lose a few pounds and want a sane approach to doing it, try Weight Watchers, or try just simply reducing your portions. The results just may surprise you.

ICE For Emergencies
Consider adding an entry into your cell phone called ICE. This stands for "in case of emergency" and is something that rescue teams look for so they can know who to notify in case you somehow become incapacitated (in an auto accident, for example). Don't forget to include your area code for those times you travel out of town. Help give rescue workers a leg up on knowing how to contact your husband, partner or loved ones and help make a potentially bad situation a little easier.
Babyproof Your Marriage!
Were you surprised at how becoming a parent changed your life? I know I was. After reading all the baby books and magazines, I felt I had a handle on what was to come, sleep deprivation and all. But nothing prepared me for the wringer my marriage would be put through. With all the stress and strain of dealing with a sassy 3 1/2 year old (or 3 and 3 quarters, if you ask her) and a sweet 4 month old, my husband and I don't always have the energy to communicate with each other the way we should. I found myself 'scorekeeping', and was too tired to realize it. This lead to resentment, which can take a toll on marriage in many ways. If I had read "Babyproofing Your Marriage" before having kids, I think it would have been a much smoother transition.
Stacie Cokrell, Cathy O'Neill, and Julia Stone, authors of "Babyproofing Your Marriage", are all wives and moms who wouldn't trade their roles for anything. Yet, they have all been there, and after noting changes in the modern marriages of today as compared to those of our parents' generation, they began gathering input from their husbands and from couples across the country. They wanted to find out how couples can safeguard their marriages upon becoming parents. They present their findings in an evenhanded approach to both sides of the marital equation, allowing spouses to understand each other in a whole new way. Stacie, Cathy and Julia offer up practical advice to keep your marriage running smoothly through the early parenting years, and they keep it light with lots of humor. Don't fall prey to common relationship pitfalls: Babyproof Your Marriage!

Health By Numbers
Heart disease is the number one killer among women. It took the life of my grandmother at age 49 (I never knew her). My own mother has been diligent at keeping herself in good health, watching both her cholesterol and blood sugar levels. She wants to be around to enjoy her grandchildren. Now that I'm a mom, I want to make sure I'm in good health so I can be around to enjoy my children, and grandchildren (one day!) too. A big part of understanding when you're at risk for heart disease is to look at your numbers. Keeping your numbers in check can help prevent a heart attack, and keep you in good health. Here's what your numbers should be:
Total Cholesterol: Less than 200
LDL ("bad") Cholesterol: Less than 100
HDL ("good") Cholesterol: 50 or higher
Triglycerides: Less than 150
Blood Pressure: Less than 120/80
Fasting Glucose: Less than 100
Body Mass Index, or BMI: Less than 25
Waist Circumference: Less than 35 inches
Preventing heart disease may be as easy as scheduling a complete blood count test (CBC) every two years. If you can't remember the last time you had one, call your doctor and schedule one today!

Target Does It Again
In their latest installment of the GO International program, Target has coupled with design duo, Proenza Schouler, to bring you some fresh and affordable finds just in time for spring.Proenza Schouler are currently at the helm New York's fashion hub with their bold, colorful, yet wearable designs. Their modern look has become a popular luxury brand, making them a perfect candidate to design a line for Target. Many of their runway looks have been watered down into basics with an edge, such as this pretty Notched Collar Cotton Blazer in faded rose. Their designs for Target are so appealing, even fashion editors can't resist scooping up a few pieces to pair with their super-pricey shoes and accessories, proving that good design comes in all price ranges.

Fair-Trade Now In Fashion
The term fair-trade has become a buzzword when discussing chocolate and coffee, but it's not something we're used to hearing in the fashion world. Start-up apparel company, Fair Indigo, is out to change that. Started in 2005 Fair Indigo set out to produce a line of women's and men's clothing and accessories, all produced using fair labor practices. Their goal was to start a smaller company with a focus not only on the products, but on the methods used to produce them. They searched the globe to find producers who could create their beautiful clothing, while paying their workers living wages.
The look of Fair Indigo's clothing is casual, yet fashionable. Think J. Crew meets J. Jill. Cashmere sweaters, cotton sateen jackets, pretty skirts, and, coming this fall, organic denim, all give this line its distinctive look. Fair Indigo's own line of spa products are crafted by women's cooperatives in Brazil, and their jewelry, in Nepal. The workers at one of their small cooperatives in Costa Rica turned such a great profit, they were able to give themselves a bonus of three months' pay. Bill Bass, co-founder of Fair Indigo, has a goal. That is to start a movement that will change how the apparel industry runs. Looks like they're off to a running start, one fashionable step at a time.

Tampontification
Have you ever thought about how many tampons and pads women's shelters in the US go through monthly? Thousands! Assistance agencies generally help with expenses of everyday necessities such as toilet paper, diapers, and clothing, but one of the most BASIC needs is overlooked - feminine hygiene products. (Who is at the helm of these funding assistance agencies anyway!?) Seventh Generation, a paper and cleaning products company that does good for the environment, now has a do-good attitude for women's shelters. They have a clever name for their clever idea - Tamponification. They will donate a box organic cotton tampons or chlorine-free pads to a women's shelter in your chosen state - just for clicking the link. Talk about easy, this takes less than 1 minute and they ask nothing of you. So tell your friends and spread the word!
