A Good, Clean Drink of Water

Today, April 30th, is the last day to donate 750 of your Aveda Pure Privilege points and $15 will be donated in your name to their Earth Month Partner, the Global Greengrants Fund, which works to protect clean drinking water for children and their families around the world. Not a member of Aveda Pure Privilege? Go to the Aveda store nearest you and sign up. For each purchase you make, you earn points.

Once you sign up for Pure Privilege points, remember that May 11 - 13, you'll get double points in honor of Mother's Day. Your points can then be redeemed for such great rewards as Aveda products, Ben & Jerry's ice cream, spa visits and donations to organizations.

Organic farming also helps to protect clean drinking water. You can support this effort by purchasing products made with such wonderful organic ingredients as lavender. Aveda has created an indulgent line of products made with certified organic lavender from Belgium that includes shampoo, soy wax candles, conditioning treatments for hair, among others. You can sign a petition to the U.N. to ask for their help in making clean water a human right.

Isn't it nice when shopping for wonderful things for yourself (or mom!) can translate into helping others? Go, Aveda!

They inspire.

Trend Watch: What's Black & White and Red All Over?

Why the latest spring fashions, of course! Black and white are making a statement for spring. But don’t think simple (as in a black top with white pants) – think bold, as in a black and white print top or jacket paired with a white skirt, or a black and white print dress. Optic prints take the stage to breathe freshness into this classic look. If you want to add a shot of color (like red!), make sure it can hold its own against this powerful pair.

The Red Robin Spa-Tacular Mom Get-A-Way

My family loves to eat at Red Robin. Their turkey burgers are delicious, they have whole grain buns, and their salads yummy (but don't get me started on the fact that they still fry their fries in partially hydrogenated oil - we simply avoid these!). Basically, it's a great place for a family meal. So what better way to honor families then to give them a contest in which to win something just in time for Mother's Day?

Red Robin is holding an essay contest called the Red Robin Spa-Tacular Mom Get-A-Way. The grand prize winner will win a trip for mom and three guests (yes, the family gets to come too!) for a five-night stay at Whistler (in either winter or summer). Mom gets the spa package, the rest of the family can sightsee, ski or just hang out. So pass this link on to your family and tell them to get busy - Mother's Day is May 13th, and the deadline for entering.

Would You "Ask A Gay Man" For Fashion Advice?

William Sledd is a gay man who likes to give advice on fashion. He started a blog on YouTube, and has produced 34 videos featuring his fashion tips (along with sidekick, Stephanie) since September, instructing his 45,000 subscribers and millions of viewers on the "perils" of high-waisted "mom" jeans and carpenter pants (unless you really are a carpenter), among other topics. In November, his video installment, Ask A Gay Man: Denim Edition reached celebrity status when it became the eighth viewed video on YouTube.

Looks like William's going to be giving lots more fashion tips. He's signed a contract with NBC and has talked with Bravo. His videos are a bit tongue-in-chic, but his message is delivered in an entertaining and easily watchable way. But can this 23 year old gay man with great hair from Kentucky give good advice for moms with kids and busy lives? Let's hope so!

Treats for Your Little Ones' Feet

When my daughter was a toddler, she had the cutest pair of Bobux shoes. Bobux are great little leather shoes (made from eco-leather that has been tanned in an environmentally friendly way) that offer an elastic ankle system to ensure the shoes stay on (we all know what a challenge this can be)! Now that my son is nearing toddler age, I've been thinking of getting him a few pairs, especially as he begins to crawl and spend more time on the floor. Turns out this is a great time to stock up - Bobux is having an overstock sale! During this limited run, take $5 off a wide selection of some of the cutest little shoes around!

A Different Kind of Diaper Bag

There are many wonderful diaper bags out there for we moms who want to look chic yet keep the nappies close at hand for those opportune moments. Yet there don't seem to be enough bags that are stylish enough to want to carry after they've served their purpose. The Sophia Baby Bag from Alexandra Bee is one that is so cute, I'd carry it whether my son's in diapers or not.

The Sophia is a multi-faceted bag with lots of clever amenities. It has s fully lined, water-resistant interior, large pockets for diapers, wipes, a bottle (of water, a baby bottle or sippy cup) and a changing pad (in the large sophia only) - pretty standard fare for a diaper bag. But wait, there's more! It also has two additional interior pockets, three easy-access pen/baby silverware pockets, an elastic keychain holder and two exterior side pockets. Whew! All that in one bag makes for a pretty well-stocked bag, whether full of diapers and Butt Paste, or your Blackberry and cosmetic bag. So splurge a little on a bag that will give you a run for the money! Available from Alexandra Bee.

Fragrance That's Good for Your Skin - And Smells Good Too!

This afternoon I had the pleasure of spending some time shopping with my mom. After a nice lunch (Cheesecake Factory) we headed straight to Sephora. We both love products, and jump at the chance to try something new. My mom headed straight for the mineral makeup and I ended up lusting over the new fragrance called Lavanila. Not only is the scent captivating, but what goes into it is as good for your skin as it smells. Lavanila is the first fragrance company to fuse vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids with a luxury fragrance that nourishes your skin while it keeps you smelling wonderfully fragrant. With three sensual versions (grapefruit, vanilla blossom and pure vanilla) to choose from, Lavanila is changing the way we spray!

Tragedy in VA

I've been without power most of the day here due to windstorms, so I've felt a little out of touch. While having dinner with some friends I was filled in on the tragedy that occurred at VA Tech today. It saddens my heart as a human being, and most of all as a mother, that such rampages continue to happen at educational institutions. I send out my condolences to the family members and friends whose loved ones were victims. My hope is we can all work together to make a better world for our children. Peace be with you all.

All Moms Go to Heaven

We mama's sure do work hard, taking care of our family and keeping things running smoothly. Then, if there's time left over, we can take care of ourselves. Don't we all know that's not nearly often enough! All Moms Go to Heaven recognizes that, and they're here to remind us that "Everyday is Mother's Day" with their cute tee shirts, hats and accessories. See more about them here.

Here are my top ten reasons why all moms go to heaven:
1/ We walk around covered in spit up, breastmilk and other bodily fluids on a daily basis.
2/ We give up the last of the milk so our daughter can have some for breakfast when we really wanted it for our coffee (and we do NEED our coffee!)
3/ After giving birth, we won't have a single piece of clothing that really fits us for at least a few months.
4/ We trade in a romantic getaway to the Caribbean for a family trip to the beach.
5/ We are fully functional (well, at least partially) from the crack of dawn until way too late at night.
6/ We are multi-tasking maniacs.
7/ Our bodies are not our own.
8/ Our kids often look more pulled together than we do.
9/ No matter how tired we are, we're always there to read bedtime stories and tuck the kids in.
10/ We shop more for our kids than we do for ourselves.

What are yours?

Fat Girl Slim

Are you ready for swimsuit season? Me, neither. After just having a baby (well, six months ago) my body is in need of a little firming in certain spots and I'm not quite ready to pull on that swimsuit just yet. At least not until I've had the chance to use some FatGirlSlim from Benefit. This lean, mean slimming cream enhances circulation and includes caffeine and QuSomes (to help penetration). It helps to smooth the skin as it firms, trims, tones, and energizes. For best benefits, apply twice daily by massaging 20-30 seconds to simultaneously stimulate circulation and shuffle a sluggish lymphatic system. Sounds like what my body needs!

Nicole Miller for JC Penney

I just love it when a really great high-end designer teams up with a mass-merchant to bring high-style to an affordable level. Target has done this expertly, in both the apparel and the home field. Seems JC Penney is following in their footsteps by working with designer Nicole Miller, and the result is a line of clothing that is easy on both the eyes and the pocketbook.

Nicole Miller has been at the forefront of fashion for more than twenty years. Her partnership with JC Penney began in 2005, with her line "Nicole for Nicole Miller". The collection was created to offer women affordable clothing for their multi-faceted lifestyle. She's done just that, offering up variety of styles ranging from capri pants and bermuda shorts to pintuck blouses and pretty tees. Just in time for spring, the line is on sale right now!

ID tags are recommended for those who have diabetes, heart disease, gastric bypass, food and drug allergies, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, transplant patients, and breast cancer patients. Like Walking on Air

I remember my first pair of Cole Haans. They were black, woven flats and I got them while at one of my first jobs just out of college. They were comfortable, as well as stylish, and they went with most things. Cole Haan is, after all, a well-known luxury brand, and I liked sporting something with such a reputation fresh out of school. I felt, well, sophisticated and in the know.

Fast forward some years, and Cole Haan remains a cutting-edge luxury brand turning out hot styles that feel as good as they look. To keep them on the cutting edge, they've teamed up with Nike to create some of the best looking comfortable shoes around! With the technology of Nike Air behind them, these shoes are sure to boost your everyday performance - and help you keep up with the pace of life.

It's All In The Wristlet

As a busy mom, I make many a quick stop to pick something up, drop something off, or make a quick dash into the coffee shop for a shot of caffeine. Most times, I have my five-month old son with me, so I like to keep what I carry to a minimum. Since he's fast approaching 18 pounds (yikes!), my biceps get enough of a workout just getting him to and from the car. I don't like to haul any extra baggage with me if I'm just going to pop in and right back out. Plus, I need to keep my hands free (to carry that cup of coffee).

The Roxy Wristlet is perfect for times like this, when all I really need are the essentials - cash, credit cards, keys, cell phone. I just slip it on my wrist, and my hands are free to hold the baby, carry my coffee, open the door, etc. For longer outings, like trips to the park, I toss it in the diaper bag and I don't have to rummage for my stuff when I need it. It's so cute, and such a bargain at $20! Available from Versamae Luxe, the Wristlet comes in several pretty patterns. Use code "totally" for 20% off your order.
