A Simply Stylish Laptop Bag

As a busy mom who feels like she sometimes carries the world around in her purse, the last thing I need in a laptop bag is something heavy and bulky. That's why I love my sleek new Laptop Messenger Bag. It's the perfect size to hold my laptop, my momAgenda, a few legal pads and some other necessities for those days when I want to work at the local coffeeshop, or I have a meeting. With a divider to help secure my laptop, there's plenty of room for other items inside the bag, in the outside zippered compartment, or one of the side compartments (perfect for keeping pens or a cell phone handy).

Made from a durable microfiber with faux-leather handles, I like that this bag can be carried as a tote, or slung on my shoulder when I need to have my hands free (when don't I??). Available from Simply Bags, this laptop bag will only set you back about $40, and includes monogramming. You can have your full monogram, or just an initial, stitched on in a fun, contrasting color. My bag is chocolate brown with a pretty kiwi "M" on the front.

Exclusive For One Chic Mama Readers:
Win a Laptop Messenger Bag of your own! To enter, send us an email with your color choice and monogram preference - full monogram or one initial - before Midnight, EST, on February 5. One winner will be chosen at random.

Order a Laptop Messenger Bag of your own (or diaper bag, tote bag, etc) and save 5% with code "onechicmama" at checkout.

Step Out With Confidence

Last week, while joining friends for a much-needed GNO*, I was walking through the restaurant and lost my footing. Fortunately, I didn't slip, but my new shoes, with buttery soft leather soles, did not make for a good match with the highly-polished floors of Enoteca Vin. I was left feeling vulnerable every time I took a step, especially after a glass or two of fabulous wine. Had I known about Grippy Steps, I could have sauntered to the ladies' room with confidence.

Grippy Steps, just $8 for a 4-pack, are little black pads that simply attach to the soles of your shoes, and work well with both heels and flats. The'll give you traction when you need it, especially with a new pair of shoes in a fancy restaurant. Grippy Steps are also lifesavers for new moms. Few things are more frightening than the thought of slipping while carrying your newborn, or even your toddler. Now, you can step out with confidence!

Wrap Your Baby In Plush Comfort

After a bath, nothing feels better than to wrap up in a plush, snuggly towel, especially when there's a chill in the air. So when I had the chance to wrap my son up in one of these soft and cozy hooded personalized bath towels from Alex Casey Baby, I just knew he'd love it as much as I would.

These fabulous hooded bath towels are some of the softest that I've seen. They come in several great color combinations, with your child's name handsewn right onto the towel in big, bold letters. The hood is fully lined with a plush fabric, and the towel itself is very fluffy - perfect for snuggling up your sweet baby or child after a bath. What I like best about this towel, though, is the size. It's a high-quality, full-sized bath towel (59" X 31"), and is something we will get lots of use from. This makes a wonderful gift, and is something a mama can use on her little one for years to come.

Eat Your Veggies and Wear Them, Too!

FoodTees are a cute new way to show the world you’re “all-natural”, “locally grown” or just plain “cool”. With fresh graphics and saucy words describing the fruits or veggies depicted, as well as the person behind them, these are designed to be a healthy reminder and a good example for everyone. FoodTees are available as t-shirts for men, women and children, onesies for babies and aprons and tote bags. They offer up food for thought in this day and age of fast-paced lives and a movement to eat more healthfully. These are an excellent way to remind yourself and your family how delicious and healthy fruits and vegetables can be, and to encourage them to pick up a crisp apple or a crunchy carrot, rather than a bag of chips, next time hunger strikes. FoodTees aprons, totes, t-shirts and onesies are between $20 and$30 from Diet Detective.

Frisco Moms Connect

Calling all Bay Area moms out there! If you haven't yet found City Mommy San Francisco, then listen up. It's a great resource for connecting with other moms in the San Francisco area. But there's more to it than just finding playdates and asking advice. City Mommy San Francisco is an online community where moms can join groups of other like-minded moms, find listings for weekly storytimes, movies and community events, and even share photos and videos. With neighborhoods listed separately, it makes it easy to find moms near you to meet for a moms' night out or an afternoon at the park.

On City Mommy San Francisco, moms have the opportunity to list and recommend resources, such as favorite restaurants and pediatricians. This creates an invaluable resource for new families moving to the area, or first-time parents needing referrals for all things baby-related. There are also opportunities for discounts, prizes and other perks, just for being a member. Because, even though it's free, membership has its privileges.

Savvy Culinary Design For Kids

I am a sucker for modern design. Anything that is a little bit edgy, or smacks of handcrafted-ness really quickens my pulse. Add functionality, and I just swoon. So when I first laid eyes on the designs from Oots, I was drawn in.

This cute dishware set, cleverly called Two Dishes and a Cup, is well, two dishes and a cup, along with a fork and a spoon for $29.95. These durable pieces are made from melamine and have lines inspired by fine ceramics. In fact, these designs are based on several made for Oots by a New Mexican ceramicist. Oots designer and founder, Arian, then added some cute and quirky graphics (fried eggs, watermelon, boys and girls) to appeal to kids, and voila! A place setting to make dinnertime a little more fun, and inspire kids to spend more time at the table (well, hopefully).

Two Dishes and a Cup comes in the cutest little package - all stacked up and contained in a bag to make for the perfect gift. I'd recommend these for children older than 3 or 4, to use by themselves. I feed my son yogurt or veggie purees (when he's not finger feeding himself) from the cup and it's the perfect size and shape. When he gets older, he can use these by himself. This set combines a modern design sensibility with form and function.

What my son can use right now, and what helps keep me sane, is the bbib. When he sits at his high-chair for mealtime or a snack, he usually requires an entire wipe-down and a change of shirt, at least. If there is anything slightly wet or liquid (juice from a clementine, a leftover piece of banana), it becomes finger paint on his tray and his body. Oh, and did I mention that he loves to put whatever he's eating on his head? I blame the Laurie Berkner song that goes "my sister's got an alligator on her head..." - we make up tons of phrases based on this, and now he likes to put his food on his head, too! But now that he's got the bbib ($18.95), which is a bib that has sleeves, too, so it's almost like a shirt, we just sweep it off him when he's finished, pop the high chair tray off, and you'd never know he just ate. I only wish I had an endless supply of these. Suggestion - buy more than one! They're fabulous, and absorbent, but if your toddler is as messy as mine is, they're going to be in the wash, oh, about every day!

Vick's Caring Tributes Giveaway Winners

The lucky winners of our Vick's Caring Tributes Giveaway are Katie K. and Jacklyn F. They have both won a Kiehl's Creme de Corps gift set.

We had such fantastic responses! When asked who people would like to pay a "caring tribute" to, we got many wonderful tributes to family and friends - grandmothers, mothers, sons, husbands and daughters to name a few. We had a handful of people to pay a tribute to themselves - good for them! We mamas work hard and are deserving of a little acknowledgement (and a little indulgence) too!

It's nice to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and love of those around us, and I really felt the love from all our contest entries. Thank you!

Quote For the Day

"If you are a teacher, a mom, whatever, you can change the world because it's your world. You can have an influence on your sphere, your domain."

- Senator Barbara Mikulski

Smotherhood

Being a mom isn't always easy. In fact, it rarely is. But with a big dose of humor and a few tricks up our sleeve, we're better equipped to get through the day. Crime reporter, mother and now author, Amanda Lamb, sure knows how to keep smiling through the worst of it. I just finished reading her memoir, Smotherhood: Wickedly Funny Confessions from the Early Years, and took heart that other moms have to deal with some of the same, crazy and at times, laughable, stuff that keeps life interesting.

As a crime reporter, Amanda is often on the beat with her local newsteam. She somehow manages to balance this aspect of her life with that of a mom. This may find her on her cell phone with the district attorney about an important case, while simultaneously fielding calls about dance lessons and playdates, during the drive to school. Amanda navigates her way around the guilt many of us working moms have, and which seems to be an integral part of being a parent. She tells it like it is, and encourages women to get real about parenting and to say exactly what's on our minds - but not in front of the kids!

My favorite chapter was "Nipping It In the Bud". Amanda discusses her husband's vasectomy in a humorous and very real way we can all relate to. It was laugh-out-loud-funny, yet I was glad to have read it so that if and when my husband decides that's the route to go, I'll know to have a scrotum holder at the ready.

For all you mamas who can use a shot of humor at the end of a long day, Smotherhood is a great read for you. It keeps it real and gives us humorous tales of the trivial and the mundane. It's a reminder that we're all in this parenting thing together, and if we don't laugh about it, we just might lose our minds!

Exclusive For One Chic Mama Readers

Are You A Sneaky Chef?

Ok, so maybe Jessica Seinfeld isn't a genius. Sure, she has some great ideas for sneaking vegetables into food to entice our kids to eat a bit healthier, but it turns out she's not the only one advocating that we whip, blend and puree our way to their good health. Missy Chase Lapine has some pretty clever ideas of her own for sneaking in good nutrition.

In her book, The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals, Missy offers up yummy recipes for things like burgers, burritos and pasta, with a few surprise guest stars - vegetable purees. She also gives us busy moms some quick fixes for boosting the nutritional profile of kid-approved favorites like Jell-O, Spaghetti-O's and macaroni and cheese from a box. Missy realizes that we don't always have the time to cook, so she gives us some easy ways to have our kids eating more vegetables without them being the wiser!

I really appreciate Missy's opinion on the whole "deception" thing. She discusses how "sneaking" in good nutrition can take the battle of wills away from the dinner table, and give kids more pleasure while eating foods that they'd typically think of as "yucky". Remember how Julie Andrews sings in Mary Poppins, "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, in the most delightful way"? It's that kind of mentality. It's realizing that you can't rationalize with a three year old, but you can get her to eat what tastes good. As kids grow, you can begin to add more obvious vegetables and let them make choices, while continuing to sneak them in so that they get their daily quota either way. But leading by example is the best way to teach your kids good eating habits that will last a lifetime. If they see you scarfing down a Big Mac night after night, that's what's going to become desirable to them. So eat your veggies too! Because even when you don't think they are, children are watching (and soaking up) everything you do.

By now, most of us have embraced denim as a wardrobe staple. Perfect for wearing to the playground, denim looks just as good when having a rare night out. A fairly new take on denim, the trouser cut, takes denim up a notch and gives it a dressier interpretation. With a flat front and wide legs, this cut is quite flattering to a number of figure types, and looks cute whether paired with a pretty sweater and flats, or a sexy top and heels.

Gap offers several styles of Trouser Jeans priced between $49.50 and $69.50. Crafted from premium denim, these will breathe new life into your denim wardrobe just in time for spring!

Short Cut

This spring, the hot trend for hair is short, as in a short, angled bob that's cut slightly longer in front than in back. Think Katie Holmes, Posh Spice or Paris Hilton. Don't want to conjure up their images, you say? Well, think about this. It's a flattering cut that works well for both straight and curly hair. It's also sleek and easy to style, shaving precious minutes off your morning routine.

The bob is a timeless look that's also very fresh and versatile. Tuck it behind one ear for a sweeping, sultry look, wear a cute clip while playing with the kids or don a thin headband to keep your hair under wraps. This is a great cut to try right now, and looks saucy under a hat. Plus, if you go short now, your hair will have a chance to grow a bit longer by summer, when you'll want to pull it back (think 90 degree days on the beach). And sometimes just cropping your hair a few inches can seemingly shave pounds off your appearance - we can all use that this time of year!

I'll Have Fries With That...

Depeche Mode. Fast Fashion. Like food, fashion can be distilled down from handcrafted couture into a mass produced production line so that a mere three weeks after models are seen slinking down the runways, curiously similar styles can be found in stores. Unlike food, though, fashion weathers the translation a bit better. One of the big names who does this well is Forever 21.

We recently got our first Forever XXI here in Raleigh, identified by Roman numerals to signify it's tremendous size and it's flagship status. It opened a few days before Christmas, and the day after, I ventured in for my first peek. What I found was surprising. While many of the items here are created for reed thin twenty-somethings, the Twelve by Twelve by Forever 21 grouping is just what we moms need. With a cut a little fuller and styles meant to flatter our figures, I found a few items that will whisk you through the winter in style.

This fabulous Luxe Lambswool Cardigan for just $39 is a fabulous layering piece. Throw it on over a brightly-hued long sleeve tee, jeans and ballet flats for chilly mornings at the playground. Then toss it on over a flowy dress to add an extra layer of warmth (as well as conceal a few extra winter pounds). I can't wait to wear mine - it's so soft and just feels good! This is a fantastic, classic style.

Calling all mod moms! This Houndstooth Lady Twill Coat for $55 gives classic a twist. This coat can be your Sunday-best, or something to throw on to run carpool. It gives an instant, ladylike boost to whatever you have on underneath - even black sweats! Throw on a pair of Jackie-O shades and you're set.
To top your look off with a dash of fun, this jaunty little Wool Buckle Beanie (just $16) will keep the heat in and keep you looking great!

So while you may be saying "no" to fast food, say "YES" to fast fashion!

A Nest For Your Baby

Creating innovative products isn't always the goal when parents design something that will fill a need. But it happens, and quite often, too. The Baby Nest Carrier from My Baby Nest is a perfect example. A couple of parents were simply looking for new products to help improve their baby's development, give them comfort and allow them to interact with their environment while being able to be carried in a safe way. And, voila, the Baby Nest Carrier was born.

The Baby Nest Carrier is a strong, flexible, hypoallergenic cotton carrier that can be worn in a multitude of positions. There are no buckles, so baby is carried in comfort and safety. The Nest is comprised of two loops and a belt (with a pocket for essentials) that can easily be wrapped and worn many different ways - baby can face front, face you, or nurse discreetly. Baby's weight is evenly distributed so it's easy on your back and shoulders. Wear your infant just home from birth up until she becomes an active toddler (35 lbs.)

The Baby Nest Carrier lets you carry your baby in comfort while freeing up your hands to do other things (I'm sure you'll think of something). It comes with a matching bag so you can conveniently toss it in your car or your stroller. The Baby Nest Carrier has recently been selected by Jewels and Pinstripes to be featured in their 2008 Celebrity BUMP Gift Bag. The Celebrity BUMP Bags are filled with the finest quality baby “must-haves” and are gifted to expecting celebrity parents.

One Good Turn

Rosie's Place is a santuary for poor and homeless women located in Boston, MA, that offers both temporary and long-term assistance to women in need. They accept no government funding and rely on committed volunteers and private supporters to stay afloat. They also offer residents the opportunity to earn a salary during their stay through the Women's Craft Cooperative. This gives women a chance to "turn themselves" while turning vintage and new buttons into some of the prettiest accessories around.

The women of Rosie's Place create lovely necklaces, magnets, barrettes, bracelets and more from buttons, stacked, glued and collaged to make a unique accessories. I have long been a fan of buttons, especially the vintage ones that have so much charm. These beautiful button pins would add a fresh look to your winter coat and make spring seem right around the corner. And with very affordable prices, you can treat yourself while sticking to your budget. Isn't it nice knowing you can indulge yourself and help women in need at the same time? Available through the Women's Craft Cooperative.

The List Goes On

Ok, you're pregnant. Now what? You know you'll need a boatload of diapers, but what else? There are so many options out there for baby, it's easy to get overwhelmed. You need some well-informed and experienced advice about what you'll really need at each phase.

Elaine Farber is the author of Baby Lists: What to Do and What to Get to Prepare for Baby, as well as a newborn consultant and mother of three. She has coached hundreds of families through early parenting, has worked in hospital nurseries and run a daycare center, among other things. In short, she knows what it takes to be prepared when babies and kids are involved. In her book, Baby Lists, divided into three parts, Elaine begins with lists for becoming baby-ready. These include such essentials as writing a birth plan, interviewing a pediatrician, and packing your bag for the hospital (including lists for siblings and an extensive list for the mom-to-be).

Elaine goes on to recommend necessities and niceties, distinguishing between what you'll need and what's just nice to have. This helps give new parents the real dirt to keep them from being tempted to just buy one of everything at the baby superstore, and from looking like a deer in headlights when confronted with stroller choices. Giving us the lowdown on high-chairs, strollers, car seats, baby gates, diaper bags and much, much more, Elaine's got checklists of what to look for and even includes a list of the best toys for baby's first year.

The third section of the book gives great recommendations on creating your personal library. With suggestions on what books will tell you what's happening with your baby and your body (from What to Expect When You're Expecting, Third Edition to The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy) to parenting books and DVD's. She also give suggestions on what music your baby will enjoy. At the end of the book, Elaine offers up some great resources for online shopping. She breaks it all down into a master shopping list, which can be very helpful when it comes time to create a baby registry or make that first shopping trip for baby gear.

Baby Lists is like getting advice from your mom or your best friend all rolled into one. Included are helpful time saving hints on caring for a newborn once you're home, and quotes from other moms throughout the book as an added bonus. Elaine Farber knows her stuff, and will give you useful information to prepare you every step of the way. I sure wish I had this book when I was pregnant. A highly recommended read for all new moms and moms-to-be, Baby Lists makes a great shower gift.

No More London, No More France...

With low-rise jeans being the popular trend these days, most of us have at least one pair in our closet. But the downfall to wearing low-rise jeans, as most of us know, can be showing off London and France as we sit down at the park, or bend over to tie our child's shoes. It can be embarrasing, to say the least.

Fortunately for us, two moms decided they had had enough of flashing their thongs when bending over, or even worse, their teenage daughters' thongs making cameo appearances at school. They created the Hip-T to give moms and their daughters a solution to showing what's better kept private.

The Hip-T is a band made from cotton with a touch of spandex for stretch. It covers the area in question (from midriff to below waist) to give you a streamlined look and keep your undies under wraps. It looks like the bottom of a camisole peeking out from under your top, without the added bulk, and gives you the coverage you need to bend over with confidence!

The Wheels On The Bus

We all know the song "The Wheels On The Bus", the perennial children's favorite. I sang this early on with both my kids, pedaling their little legs, clapping their little hands and introducing them to movement at a very early age. When we received a copy of The Wheels On The Bus to review for Parent Bloggers Network, my daughter was delighted!

The Wheels On The Bus DVD starts off with Mango the Monkey and Papaya the Toucan arguing over a magnifying glass at the zoo. The don't want to share, and the zookeeper comes over to give them a lesson on sharing and taking turns. Thus begins a theme that runs throughout the DVD, along with lessons on not procrastinating (the characters make these big words fun to learn) and getting along.

As Mango and Papaya board the bus after their trip to the zoo, they meet a cast of characters including a bright young girl named Coco, all with lessons of their own. With Argon the Dragon as their bus driver (Roger Daltry of The Who fame), these colorful characters are soon singing, playing musical instruments and rhyming with new verses to that eponymous song and getting all the passengers involved in the action. As passengers begin to discuss their destinations (including an entymologist who invites everyone on a jungle bug adventure), they make a stop to pick up a little dog. Dog is headed to a very important place - the dog parade. Unfortunately, he proscratinated and missed his ride. He also doesn't like cat, who is already aboard the bus. The happy, friendly passengers help him get to his destination when he can't remember where the parade will be held. During the busride, Argon reminds them of the golden rule - be nice to others and they will be nice to you.

As the passengers get a bit lost, they come across a quartet of fairies; the fairy of friendly words and actions; the fairy of gentle hugs and kisses, the fairy of taking turns and the magical traveling fairy. They have a message to pass along - hugs and kisses around the world. They encourage cat and dog not to fight, and to be nice to others. This is our favorite part. The fairies costumes are pretty and the kids can sing well. There is some good talent in this DVD that the parents can appreciate, as well as entertainment that the kids will enjoy.

With help from friends and fairies, dog makes it to the parade on time. After realizing it's much more fun to get along, he invites his new friends join him for some fun together. The dog parade is a hoot, with some great dog costumes that had my daughter enthralled! Parents, you'll love this part, too.

The Wheels On The Bus is a fun DVD that imparts several important messages kids just can't miss. Full of singing and dancing, this will get your kids up off the couch and have them dancing right along. Even my 1 year old got into the action! Thumbs up for The Wheels On The Bus from our house.
