What to Wear on New Year's Eve

Happy new year
Quick! It's new year's eve already and you've been so busy entertaining the kids that you haven't even given the first thoought to what you'll wear to celebreate. Whether you're having a low key family celebration with friends, family and neighbors, or have a sitter lined up so you can have some grown-up fun, don't let your lack of a great outfit get you down. Here are a few quick and easy tips for creating a chic outfit from what you already have in your closet.

1/ First, start with a great pair of dark wash jeans. You can get so many looks with the perfect pair - they can be the foundation of many a special occasion outfit.

2/ Top your look off with a simple tee or tank in a light neutral color and then add a satin boyfriend jacket, a sassy sequin topper or an animal print jacket to create a spirited combination that's ready for fun. If you can only come up with a black jacket or cardigan, jazz it up with your accessories and shoes.

3/ This is a great time to think metallics. Whether you fancy silver or go wild for gold, bring it on in the form of a pretty sweater, a jacket and some bold bling to pull it all together. A metallic handbag is also a chic touch.

Putting together a festive outfit doesn't require a shopping trip but it does take a fresh perspective. Look at your clothing and accessories with a brand new attitude and you'll be sure to create a memorable outfit just perfect for ringing in the new year.

Happy new year!

Sale Shopping, Strategically

Now that the Christmas crush is over, we have one thing to look forward to - sales galore! Yes, right now you can find just about everything at a discount (except the Wii and Zsu Zsu pets) and prices are being slashed so low it's enough to make your pulse quicken and your judgment to wane. But before you go and get yourself deeper into trouble (remember, you did just buy a whole heap of Christmas presents that you may still be paying for), read my tips for avoiding impulse purchases and buyer's remorse.

1/ Make a List and Check it Twice: Before you jump in the car and rush to the mall just because everyone else is doing it, take a deep breath. Now take out a pencil and paper and make a list of what you're actually shopping for. Have you been waiting for the sales to buy your winter coat? Or have you recently had the need for snow boots? Whatever it is, write it down!

2/ Do Your Homework: Now, hop on the internet and find out who has the best deals. Some stores offer online coupons so make sure you print those out to take with you. Or, save yourself the hassle and just shop online. Many stores are offering free shipping.

3/ Plan Your Attack: If you're hitting the mall, this is where you need to be very strategic because it will be crowded. Plan to get there early for best selection and stick to your list.

4/ Eat!: Some of the worst purchasing decisions have been fueled by low-blood sugar, so ensure you eat a good breakfast, plan for a lunch break and bring granola bars, fruit leather or trail mix with you.

5/ Don't be a Label Whore: What I mean by this is don't buy something just because it's Juicy Couture and it's 90% off if it's not your color, not your style and 3 sizes too small. Sure, Juicy Couture is chic, and sure, it's a high-end label that you'd be scoring for a bargain. But it wouldn't look good on you, it wouldn't fit you and it would just end up taking space in your closet. A little tough love on this topic is necessary. Enough said.

6/ Choose Wisely: First, see above. Once you've determined that an item is in your color and does indeed fit, think about what you'd wear it with. Ideally, an item should go with 3 items already in your closet. More is better. Determine if the look is really you. If your style is classic and you're tempted by a very girly/romantic looking blouse, think long and hard about whether you could see yourself wearing it. Stick to tried and true and go for what works for you.

7/ Go Alone: Yes, I know shopping with friends is fun, and shopping with kids is sometimes unavoidable. But to make the best decisions you need to go it alone. As boring as that sounds, it does give you time to reflect on whether items really fit your lifestyle without getting home to find that brown dress was more your friend's style, or the placemats would have been a better fit for your sister.

Take advantage of the great deals and offers now, but beware clever marketing tactics or impluse purchasing. If you find yourself wanting something just because your friend/sister/mom got one, wait 24 hours and see how you feel. If you still really want it, look at the real reasons why: because you want to keep up with your peers is not good enough to plunk down hard earned cash. Because it fits your lifestyle and your budget is. Know the difference. Happy shopping!

What to Wear Christmas Day

Perfect Holiday Sweaters
With Christmas drawing near most of us have been so busy running around and taking care of last minute details that we haven't had a chance to think about what we're going to wear on the big day. Whether you'll be hosting a house full of friends and relatives, or spending a nice, quiet holiday with those closest to you, elegant comfort is a great way to adorn yourself for the big day. What is elegant comfort? Easy - it's where your favorite comfy items such as jeans and a tee shirt combine to create an outfit that is greater than the sum of its parts. The secret ingredient? A fabulous sweater. But wait just a minute. Before you begin thinking about pulling out your "holiday sweater" I'd like to ask you to think again. Donning a big, boxy, shapeless sweater that boasts a light-up Santa or a huge Christmas wreath is just not going to be flattering. But don't despair - a chic outfit isn't out of reach. In fact, it's easier than you think. Here's how to get started:

1/ Start with a great pair of jeans, or even a pair of flattering knit pants. After all, you are going to be lounging around, opening presents and enjoying the comfort of your own home (or a relative's). But remember, comfort does not trump fit. Fit (and flattery) is key.

2/ Start with a lightweight layer of a knit tank or tee that fits close to the body. You don't need any extra bulk, especially around the middle.

3/ Top it off with a fabulous sweater - think understated as in one color, with some simple details like ruffles, ties or a collar.

4/ Add a few simple pieces of jewelry - earrings or a necklace, a bracelet, a pretty ring.

5/ Slip on a pair of comfy flats. You may find yourself sitting on the floor amid piles of presents so heels may not be appropriate.

6/ Toss a pretty scarf around your neck that can double as a wrap if you get chilly. This is a great way to add a shot of color and enhance your eyes or hair.

You're ready! Elegant comfort is easy peasy and can help take your look to the next level without sacrificing ease.

What is your favorite outfit for Christmas morning?

Dress The Kid But Not the Parent? Bad Idea

Editor's Note: This article comes from Diana Pemberton Sikes and I thought it was a nice reminder for us moms to take pride in our appearance as we dress our kids up for the holidays. Enjoy!

Over the weekend, my daughter and I performed in our dance studio’s annual production of “The Nutcracker.” It’s a big production – 100 dancers, handmade costumes and sets – and we’ve been rehearsing since September. So imagine my annoyance after each performance when I saw a lot of audience members dressed in t-shirts and jeans, like they were going to the park to walk their dog instead of to the theater to see a ballet. Oh, there were a few little girls in beautiful Christmas dresses, but by and large, they were the only ones appropriately attired. Dress the kid but not the parent? Personally, I think that’s a bad idea.

As a parent myself, I understand the desire to give my children more than I had. It’s fun to “dress them to the nines” for special occasions, particularly when they’re little. But dressing them well while neglecting our own appearance sends a dangerous message: that the child is more important than the parent.

I have a couple of problems with that:

First, regularly funneling most of the household resources to one person creates resentment. It can also instill a sense of entitlement for the one getting all the stuff, and let’s face it: no one likes a brat. So be VERY careful about depriving yourself to spend lavishly on your kid. Distribute resources equitably and raise a more considerate, level-headed child.

Secondly, always walking around like a washer woman can really chip away at your self esteem. You’re ignored, passed over, and generally treated with no respect. But then again, why should you be? If you don’t respect yourself enough to ditch the baggy sweats and faded t-shirt and present yourself as a vibrant, interesting woman, why should anyone else? Dress and act like a lady and you’ll be treated as one.

Finally, we are our children’s role models. If we don’t show them how to work, dress, and function in polite society, who do you think is going to? You can’t just tell them; you have to show them by example. Otherwise they’ll turn to television, the Internet, and their friends — and you may not like the results.

Free Global Lost and Found for Electronics

Are your kids getting portable electronics such as cell phones, Leapsters, Nintendos or iPods for Christmas this year? Are you afraid they might lose them? Then make sure you add a TigerTag sticker to help ensure the item's safe return. No, TigerTag is not a robotic homing device that magnetically attracts the item in question back into your child's hands. But it is a sticker that contains a unique ID number. When the tagged item goes missing, the finder can just log onto TigerTag.com to get details for returning the item to its rightful owner. With a service center that's available 24/7, it's easy to do the right thing. And it's completely free!

TigerTag is powered by Good Samaritans and has an impressive 75% recovery rate, proving that people, when given the chance, really do want to help their fellow man. So grab a TigerTag for your kids items for a little peace of mind. Heck, why not get one for your laptop and cell phone, too? Cause 'mommy brain' can cause us to be a tad forgetful sometimes.

Sneaky Snacks that are Good for You

Face it, with all the hustle and bustle, not to mention edible temptations, this time of year it can be pretty darn hard to eat right. Plus, with all the rushing around we let ourselves get famished and then (yikes!) find ourselves wolfing down treats that we really meant to avoid. Uh-oh. But don't quit eating altogether. Just pick some smart snacks in between meals to keep your metabolism up and keep you feeling sated. Here are some of my top choices for healthy snacks that both you and the kids will love:

1. My kids and I all love this rich pudding from ZenSoy. Made from soy and naturally sweetened, this low-fat pudding will fill you up, not out, and is a great way to get your chocolate fix. Our favorite flavor is Chocolate/Vanilla Swirl. Find it at your local Whole Foods.

2. When what you really want is a cookie, try a whole-grain LUNA Cookie in chocolate mint, berry pomagranate or peanut butter chocolate. They're full of fiber and omega-3's, as well as calcium and folic acid. Toss them in your handbag or keep a few in your car to help kick hunger pangs (and cravings) to the curb. Find them at Target or Whole Foods.

3. I love cheese but the fat content can be daunting. That's why I love these cute cheese wedges from Laughing Cow. With just 4 grams of fat per wedge, each one is individually packaged and can go a long way with a few whole-grain crackers. You can also choose from a selection of flavors to keep your palate happy! Find it at most grocery stores.

4. Staying hydrated is extremely important and can also prevent false hunger pangs. Treat your water to a vitamin-C packed energy boost from Emergen-C and forget your afternoon caffeine pick-me-up. Available in a variety of flavors, it tastes good while boosting your immune system at the same time. Find it at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and other health and drug stores.

5. When we're on the go and have little-to-no time to think about snacks, it's nice to know we can just scoot through a drive-through somewhere without feeling a ton of guilt. McDonald's Fruit n' Yogurt Parfait packs only 160 calories and 2 grams of fat while packing in plenty of calcium and a serving of fruit. Plus, moms and kids alike will enjoy this one and it seems like a much higher-calorie treat. Even better when it's on the $1 menu.

So don't skip snacks, just snack smarter. Because a hungry mama is a grumpy mama (trust me on this one) and when we eat a healthy snack every few hours it can help us eat less at meals and even help us lose weight.

Simple Gifts

So now that we're in the final countdown to Christmas with less than two weeks away, this is usually when things start to get interesting (read: frantic). It's like a sudden wave that comes over us and we start re-thinking gifts to our loved ones, feeling that maybe we should do more than we already have and prompting us to blow our well-managed holiday budget to smithereens.

But, really, do most of us need another (insert favorite item here)? Chances are we have too much clutter in our home, too many things on our schedule and not nearly enough time to enjoy anything else we might receive. So I'd like to offer up some food for thought. My gift to you today is a list of some very inspired gifts that will touch a loved-one's heart while keeping its hands off your budget.

1/ Gift Certificates - this could be for breakfast in bed, a coffee date or a foot rub. Whether you make it on the computer or draw it by hand, the sentiment will be treasured.

2/ Words of Love - write a poem, special note or a story from the heart. This could be from you or have one of your kids write something to Dad, Grandma, etc. Print it on pretty paper and frame it and you've created something that can be enjoyed regularly.

3/ Make Something - Whether you're a master craftsman or a complete novice, something handmade is always appreciated. Knit a scarf, make a piece of jewelry or bake a much loved pie and you'll win over the recipient's heart.

4/ Pictures - If you're stumped for a gift for grandparents, why not print out some cute pictures of the kids? Even better, have a photo calendar or journal made and they'll have new pictures to enjoy each month.

5/ Time - It's something we all could use a little more of. Offer to take a friend's kids for a few hours or to help with a big project.

6/ A Family Heirloom - The holidays are the perfect time to pass down a treasured family heirloom. One of my favorite gifts was recieveing my grandmother's engraved watch with a picture of she and my grandfather tucked into the back of it. I'll always treasure it!

7/ Plants - If you have a green thumb and plants to spare why not pass along a few of your favorites to someone who could appreciate them? They'll be enjoyed for many years to come.

8/ A Special Outing - You could organize a trip to a local museum along with lunch, plan a weekend getaway for you and your spouse or just make time to go to a free concert with a special someone. Just spending time together is the real gift.

Take a deep breath, release your stress and realize that the best gift may be something that doesn't cost a thing!

Fit for the Fashionista

Moms are natural multitaskers, and as such, we appreciate it when wardrobe and beauty staples follow suit. So of course we just love these fabulous warm winter Shakoha boots by Anna Sui for FitFlop ($195). Made from a gorgeous double-faced shearling and adorned with metal studs with handstitching, you'd buy them for their looks alone. But with FitFlop's patented Microwobbleboard midsole (say that 3 times fast!), these boots not only look chic, they also give you a workout while you walk. The revolutionary FitFlop footwear brand has proved itself a leg toning, shock-absorbing, pain relieving sandal endorsed by the American Podiatric Society and leading US doctors . FitFlop founder, Marcia Kilgore, calls Anna Sui a "genius who has reinvented fashion." I call the collaboration a style epiphany! Perfect for the fashionista on your Christmas list (even if that means you!)

Update Your Look with Accessories

accessory bundles
The holiday season brings many outings, events and parties, yet having a closet full of clothing to take you through all these festivities without wearing the same outfit twice can pose a challenge. One great way to get more mileage from the clothes you already own is to freshen up your look with accessories, which can be the icing on the cake. They finish of your look and make you feel pulled together. They’re also a fun way to express your personality and have a little fun! Here are a few tips for adding accessories to your look:

1 – Wear accessories that are proportional to your body type. If you’re petite, opt for delicate necklaces and small purses. If you’re goddess-sized, feel free to rock a big handbag or a chunky necklace. You want to complement your look while creating balance.

2 – Choose a theme, or creating groupings that repeat a color, texture or pattern. When you wear a red scarf, a red bracelet and red shoes, you can wear this grouping with anything from a little black dress to jeans and a sweater and you’ll have a cohesive look while making a statement.

3 – Create a signature look with your accessories. Wearing a scarf could become your signature, or you may be known for your funky watches. An armful of bangles, a chic hat, sexy boots…just make sure it’s something that really speaks to you. You can build a collection around those accessories you love, making it a pleasure to get dressed.

Let wearing accessories be a pleasure, and something that expresses your own personal style. Mix high end with low end and create a collection that you can continually add to. You’ll look fabulous and feel great!
